“Human Life in a French Fertility Clinic: Circulation of a Category”

Noémie Merleau-Ponty Ph.D. candidate in Paris (EHESS-LAIOS/iiAC).

Visiting Student Reasearcher at The Center for Science Medicine and Society (CSTMS)

After multi-sited participant observations and interviews in laboratories situated in France and India, Noémie Merleau-Ponty’s work delineates processes of conception, circulation, transformation and uses of human embryos and human embryonic stem cells. At the interface of assisted reproductive technologies and regenerative medicine research, this ethnographic inquiry interrogates ontological categories, scales and frontiers of these living beings. For this talk, she will focus on the circulation of the category of “human life” in a French fertility clinic, showing intertwined processes of biology, humanization and kinship building.
